The female farmer became a famous poet

ChinaWhen Han Si Mai was invited to Beijing to speak at the United Nations office, many people still did not know why a farmer would have this honor.

Ms. Han, 51, from Nanyang City, Henan Province had to drop out of school in her second year of high school, because her family was too poor. In 1993, she was arranged to marry a man from a neighboring village named Vuong Tien Quan to get a 3,000 yuan wedding to help with the family’s finances.

After getting married, Han discovered that in order to have money to marry her, her husband’s family had to take out loans everywhere, waiting for the daughter-in-law to finish paying the debt. This woman motivates herself and works hard. She took care of the fields alone, applied to work in the factory and worked hard overtime to earn some extra money. Everyone in the village said that marrying a daughter-in-law of 3,000 yuan would make her husband’s family profitable.

Even during her pregnancy, she worked nonstop. The husband has never cared about his wife, being lazy to work but also addicted to gambling. Many times the creditor came to the house to ask for money, Han could only hold his child and cry.

“Since getting married, I feel like a lone bird, no one notices, no one sympathizes or relents,” she said of the difficult period. However, since exposure to the Internet, a woman’s life has completely changed.

Originally a lover poetryFrom July 2020, Mrs. Han began to express herself through self-composed and shared poems on her personal page. There are kanji characters that she can’t write, so she had to write phonetic transcriptions, but anyone who reads can understand.

Right from the first poem about a woman’s sadness, Han received hundreds of likes. When relatives asked why a farmer like her also asked to write poetry, Han Si Mai expressed: “I write poetry when I’m not happy. Poetry relieves sadness.”

Over time, this uneducated peasant woman produced hundreds of works and was well received by readers. But the wife’s popularity makes the husband feel uncomfortable. Mr. Wang used to cut off the Internet, banning her from using mobile phones. Because of this, Han filed for divorce from her husband, but Vuong brought two immature children to threaten his wife. The villagers who knew the story also said that she was happy and left her husband and children.

No matter how determined Han Si Mai is, children are always a woman’s weak point, so she has to endure to stay.

Unhappily living, the Internet world is a great source of motivation for her. Her poems and stories about her life were widely shared and received much attention and encouragement from everyone.

When the youngest daughter just graduated from university and the eldest son got married, in April 2021, Han Si Mai once again filed for divorce, really living for herself.

Now, Han Si Mai has 10,000 fans and writes more than 300 poems. No longer dark colors, her recent poems are more and more cheerful, expressing a strong desire for life and freedom.

Although many people commented, Korean poems “really aren’t poems”, she calmly said: “I know I don’t have a high level, but they are all real emotions from life”.

On November 25, 2021, Han Si Mai was invited by the United Nations Agency for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) to speak in front of hundreds of audiences.

Becoming famous after writing poetry and returning from Beijing, Han Si Mai said her life was not more favorable but also caused a lot of gossip in the village. “Now I don’t care about those things. If you think too much, you will be very tired,” she said.
