The poor fishing village in Vietnam has changed with many “super” works, the third largest car factory in the world
The ‘super’ works on Cat Hai island

Cat Hai is an island made of sand, with an area of 40 square kilometers, located in Cat Hai district (Hai Phong). It has one town and four communes, which are poor fishing villages, mainly based on inshore fishing.

But things started to change when Dinh Vu – Cat Hai economic zone was established in 2008 to develop seaport services. In particular, Tan Vu bridge – the longest sea-crossing bridge in Vietnam and Tan Vu – Lach Huyen road built in 2014 have changed the face of this place.

The road with a total investment of 11,848 billion VND, 15 km long has shortened the travel time from Dinh Vu to Cat Hai island by nearly an hour compared to taking the ferry.

On September 2, 2017, the groundbreaking ceremony of VinFast automobile “super factory” took place. This is a factory with a total investment of 3.5 billion USD, the third largest in the world (335 ha).

After only 21 months, in June 2019, VinFast car factory was inaugurated. The capacity of the factory is 250,000 units/year and will increase to 500,000 units/year by 2025, equal to the total sales of the domestic market. After producing gasoline cars, the factory has now completely switched to producing electric vehicles. In 2021, this factory paid nearly 5,000 billion VND in tax, the highest in Hai Phong. There are roads, there are big factories, but Cat Hai island will not be able to “makeover” without a deep-water port. Hai Phong Newport (HICT) is the largest deep-water container port in the North, capable of receiving ships of up to 14,000 TEU (1 TEU is equivalent to 1 standard container, about 6 m long).

Hai Phong Newport can bring goods directly to the US and Europe, helping to reduce transportation time and costs.

The container yard of HICT port is 44 hectares wide, with 8 large cranes and 24 small cranes.

To ensure the safety of Hai Phong Newport and avoid sedimentation, a 10 km long sea dyke was built to block alluvium.

Not only has the effect of blocking sand, the sea dyke accidentally becomes the longest artificial walking path in Vietnam, attracting tourists to visit and experience.

Not only industrial development, tourism in Cat Hai is also focused. In order to shorten the travel time to Cat Ba island, the nearly 4 km long Cat Hai – Phu Long cable car route was inaugurated in June 2020. This is a 3-wire cable car route with the highest cable pole in the world (214.8 m).

Cat Hai – Phu Long cable car route has 60 cabins, each cabin can accommodate 30 guests, operating at a maximum speed of 8m/s, with a capacity of 4500 passengers/hour. In the photo is Cat Hai station with architecture simulating an ancient shipyard.

Besides, Cat Hai island also has Ben Got ferry with 4 large ships and 5 small ships to connect with Cat Ba tourist island. With great investment, the appearance of Cat Hai island has completely changed from a poor fishing village to become an industrial center, a large seaport in the North, making a significant contribution to the development of Hai Phong port city.
