US bans Russian ships, continuously providing aid to Ukraine
President Joe Biden announced that all ships flagged, owned or operated by Russia will not be welcome in US ports.
According to Russia Today, the above statement was made by President Biden at the White House today (April 21), after a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. Washington will do the same with the European Union (EU) in banning all ships with ties to Moscow from docking in the US.
The move is aimed at “removing Russia from the benefits of the international economic system that it enjoyed in the past,” Biden said.
In addition, the US President also announced a new military aid package worth $ 800 million to Ukraine, to support Kiev forces in the clash with Russian troops in the Donbass region.
“This aid package includes weapons such as heavy artillery, with dozens of artillery pieces and 144,000 rounds of ammunition. It also includes more tactical drones,” Biden said.
In a related development, a US Treasury official on the same day said that Washington will provide Ukraine with a direct aid package of up to 500 million USD, to help Kiev continue important activities, in addition to the aid package. $500 million aid that President Biden announced in March.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will make an announcement about the aid package during a meeting with Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Ukraine’s Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko later today. US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo will also attend the meeting.
The new aid will help Ukraine pay government salaries, cover pensions and fund other essential programs to avoid exacerbating the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict with Russia.
