While cartoons are popular with children for their humorous storylines, anime offers a wide variety of choices for audiences of all ages, including adult themes. In addition, there are significant differences between these two animation styles.

Brief history of cartoon and anime

Clearly defining the two genres requires tracing back to their history and origins. First, the origin of anime is rooted in the west. Japanese animations appeared in the late 20th century and the animation produced by these companies was called “anime”. The animation style of anime is very diverse, from short films to seasonal series.

The origin of the cartoon, on the other hand, dates back to a much simpler form around 1499, when it was used as a study guide for patterns or drawings. Cartoon comes from “Karton”, which means hard or heavy paper. Compared to Cartoon, anime reflects and is close to the real world but is expressed in an exaggerated manner.

Another difference between the two genres is the graphic style. Most anime are adapted from manga, so the graphics are often very detailed. Series like Fate, Jojo Bizarre Adventures and Attack on Titan clearly show the production studio’s attempt to recreate the real world. This gives the anime character’s face a variety of expressions, some anime even attracting audiences by using slightly exaggerated expressions.

Anime vs Cartoon: Which genre has better graphics and plot?

Aside from the facial expressions, the anime’s setting and environment design is much clearer than that of the cartoon. Although there are many cartoons, such as Avatar: The Last Airbender, there has been a lot of effort in the design stage; however, the anime is still of better quality. Many argue that the tremendous growth of anime is one of the main reasons for the change in anime art style since the early 2000s.

The concept of protagonist – villain in the film is also a differentiating factor between these two genres. In the plot of the cartoon, there are unwritten rules regarding the role of one or a group of heroes. The common point of many cartoon works is that the hero group will have very few female characters. A good example of this is the Justice League in DC animation. Wonder Woman is an important rare female lead in a series about a group of heroes. But this is completely different for anime. In anime, the main character or group of heroes are not limited to a specific type of character, they can be girls, creatures like dragons or slimes…

As for villains, cartoons tend to depict the character in a simplistic way in terms of both shape and motives, often involving demons or distortions. However, anime has diversity when it comes to building villains, anyone can be an anime villain and so the movie becomes interesting and unpredictable. The perpetrator could be the nice-looking neighbor next door or even the seemingly withdrawn kid in class. Ayanakouji in Classroom of the Elite is a prime example of the concept of an anime villain. Characters with antisocial tendencies always hide their ideals very well. It is not until the end of the film that the audience understands the character’s inner self and his motives.

Plot is probably one of the biggest differences between anime and cartoon. Many popular cartoons have almost no specific plot. South Park, Simpsons, and The Amazing World of Gumball, for example, all have no plot because their purpose is to elicit humor. In contrast, long-running and humorous anime series like One Piece and Mob Psycho still have a tight plot.

The perfect combination of humor, action and adventure, turns anime into a quality experience for the audience. In addition, most of the anime plots are built very creatively and intelligently. Attack on Titan is probably one of such anime. Each film color, the focus of the series takes place in a completely different direction that the audience cannot predict. The disclosure of information, character’s personality surprised fans, it showed the investment and careful care in the plot of the anime.

The elements in the anime are invested as with a live-action film. The opening theme song was written specifically for the series. Audiences can access an anime work in many different forms such as manga, light novel or live-action. Besides, the setting and system of the anime is so good that it can be used to create video games. Therefore, although cartoons have been around for longer than anime, anime is a popular franchise, with a variety of topics for the audience to choose from.
