Why is Gear 5 white? The battle between Luffy and Blackbeard is about to begin?
During the battle between Luffy and Kaido, after Luffy transformed into his Gear 5 form, Luffy’s hair and shirt color changed from his normal black hair and red shirt to white. This doesn’t really make much sense, as Luffy can be any color he wants.
However, if you put it in the context of a manga that was only available in black and white when it was published, Oda’s design change for Luffy could very well mean more than just “changing colors to look good”.
First, let’s take a look at the process of designing the characters in One Piece. Overall, all the characters in One Piece Although it is not determined a specific “color” through the drawings in the manga, but Oda always gives his character a certain “darkness”.
Through comparing the contrast and difference in black ratio in the character’s design, we can easily recognize the difference in their color. Thanks to this, his characters can always stand out from their surroundings, no matter what the circumstances.
This becomes even more important to Luffy’s design. Luffy himself is a normal sized human, while his opponents get bigger and bigger over time. Thanks to the outstanding contrast and blackness, we easily recognize Luffy’s position in the midst of a huge jungle of enemies around, such as the image below:
This has always been the case until now, until Oda started changing the design of Gear 5 in the past chapters. So what is the reason for this change? That is the background. First of all, let’s take a look at some scenes where Gear 5 was changed to black as before:
We can easily see, with a background of all white, or bright colors, the design of Gear 5 makes Luffy almost drowned in the background color. This bright background design is also the main design of One Piece so far. Most of the battles and key scenes in One Piece take place underground, with a white and light background all around. That makes Luffy’s black design stand out.
However in the battle between Kaido and Luffy, we see a change. It was the two fighting in midair, with the background of a dark cloudy sky. And I think this is the reason why Oda changed the design: later battles will take place in the black background, or in the dark, when Luffy has possessed the ability to fly for long periods of time.

Remember Luffy’s main opponent in this series is the Black Beard, who possesses the dark fruit. Ace formerly possessed the color of fire and was defeated by him. And Luffy, who possesses the white color that fights in the dark, is the one who will dispel the darkness and bring dawn to this world.
Also, another important detail, is that since the time Luffy changed to Gear 5, Oda has stopped painting his body black to demonstrate the use of armed Haki. Luffy combined all the Haki he had when fighting Kaido without changing his body color:
I suppose this could be a change by Oda to remove the positioning of power through armed Haki that blackens the body. In the near future, all of Luffy’s opponents will be able to use armed Haki, so coloring in black is no longer necessary.
Thus, just by changing the white – black contrast, Oda can easily give Luffy new, “freer” shapes, without having to try to change his body, blacken Luffy only to show that Luffy is “on Haki”.
In my opinion, the image liberation from “armed Haki blackening”, is what makes Gear 5 the most free-spirited ability on the high seas.
