CNN+ closed after 1 month of launch

CNN+ had a grand opening ceremony on March 29 and will be forced to close on April 30. This is considered a wrong and failed strategy of the world’s leading news agency CNN.

According to CNN, the CNN+ news streaming service, like Netflix, launched just days before the merger of CNN’s former parent company WarnerMedia with Discovery to become the new “Warner Bros. Discovery” company. The app’s launch was once considered the most important event since CNN’s founding in 1980.

Previously, CNN+ operators hoped the service would attract 2 million subscribers in the first year and 15-18 million users in the next four years. It is estimated that CNN+ will be profitable in the next 4 years with an investment of about 1 billion USD.

Currently, CNN has poured about 350 million USD to build the CNN+ online channel. However, right from the moment this baby was born, many people doubted and judged that it was forced to be “born prematurely” and in fact “died prematurely” after less than 1 month.

Sheet New York Times quoted Mr. Licht, head of Warner Bros. Discovery, believes that CNN+ is no longer aligned with the company’s strategy and should be shut down soon. Mr. Licht also likened the birth of CNN+ to building a house where the builder was not allowed to exchange ideas with the owner. As a result, there will not be a house as desired.

Still follow WTJ, CNN+’s launch failed to attract users with less than 100,000 subscribers. The fee is said to be high, nearly 6 USD per month. While facing legal hurdles, the channel lacks breaking news, which is vital to the press and media.

The shutdown of CNN+ not only costs CNN hundreds of millions of dollars, but also puts hundreds of employees at risk of being laid off.

The rapid demise of CNN+ is testament to the fierce competition in the streaming market. However, in the current trend, many users are gradually giving up cable television, and many major media companies in the US are also promoting their content on digital platforms.
