Italy bans air conditioning below 25 degrees Celsius in public places

The regulation will take effect from May 1 and last until March 31 of next year. The new regulation also clarifies that in winter, heating systems in public buildings in Italy cannot be turned on at a temperature higher than 19 degrees Celsius during the prescribed time.

It is not clear how Italian authorities will implement the new rule, but inspectors from the country’s Labor Ministry can monitor and impose fines of between $ 540 and $ 3,200 for violations.

The temperature limit regulation does not apply to hospitals, but could later be applied to people’s private homes. The regulation could save 2-4 billion cubic meters of gas per year, officials say.

Currently, the use of air conditioning accounts for about 57% of the energy costs of a public office building in Italy.
