Kiev lobbied the EU to ditch the Russian gas pipeline and change it to Ukraine
Kiev wants the EU to change shipping methods Russian gas by Nord Stream 1 to the gas pipeline network through the territory of Ukraine.
Goverment Ukraine is said to be trying to convince European countries to remove Russian gas shipments through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.
The move is aimed at forcing Russia to transit more gas through Ukraine to Europe, according to energy officials cited by Reuters.
The cost of transiting gas through Ukraine would therefore also increase and would support Kiev’s budget, for example helping the country’s wartime defense, while preventing Russia from destroying gas pipeline of Ukraine – Reuters quoted officials speaking to lawmakers and the administration of US President Joe Biden.
Moscow “depends on us to transport gas from Russia to Europe. This is something to take advantage of in our discussions with them and Europe can help,” said Olga Bielkova, international affairs director of Ukraine’s Gas Transport System Operator , said.
Natural gas shipments by Russia to Germany via Nord Stream 1 pipeline up to 55 billion cubic meters per year. In addition, Russia’s Gazprom energy group supplies 40 billion cubic meters to Europe through Ukraine’s gas transit system, paying transit fees to Kiev in USD.
Ukrainian officials propose 40% of the capacity of Nord Stream 1 was redirected to the Ukrainian pipeline immediately, gradually increasing to 100% by April 2023. That will give EU countries time to accumulate gas reserves for the winter and diversify supplies.
Ukraine is also said to be seeking US assistance to access supplies from liquefied natural gas (LNG) ports in Turkey.
