Sherri Papini’s husband, woman who lied about 2016 kidnapping, files for divorce, custody of children

Sherri Papini’s husband, a California woman, who admitted to carrying out a kidnapping in 2016 According to court documents obtained Friday, that touched on a nationwide search, divorce filing and emergency custody of the couple’s two children.

In divorce papers filed earlier this week in State Superior Court in Redding, an attorney for Keith Papini noted that Sherri Papini pleaded guilty with two counts of mail fraud and lying to a law enforcement officer and said she was “under particular pressure to receive national media attention about her case.”

The filing states that she “failed to act reasonably” and that their children, aged 9 and 7, “would not have suffered the traumatic chaos if she had attempted to obtain actual custody of the children. .”

An attorney for Sherri Papini, 39, declined to comment on Friday.

Sherri Papini has offered no explanation for the fabricated kidnapping plot, involving two Hispanic women, who she claims kept her at gunpoint and branded her.

Sherri Papini’s three-week disappearance in November 2016 from her Northern California home prompted a search across California and several other states, which ended with her showing up on Interstate 5 with a chain around the waist.

Authorities said she was actually with an ex-boyfriend in Southern California.

After her reappearance, Sherri Papini sought $30,000 in victim aid and lied to investigators when they presented evidence that her abduction was fake.

Sherri Papini has said that she is “deeply ashamed” for making up the story and that she will “do the rest of my life to correct what I did.”

In a plea agreement reached this month with federal prosecutors, she agreed to pay more than $300,000 in restitution. She faces a maximum sentence of 20 years and 5 years on the charges, though prosecutors have said they will ask for a reduced sentence.

Sherri Papini is expected to be sentenced on July 11.
