Also, Tom called Jane’s daughter-in-law about a day after Gertrude McCabe’s body was found. He told her that Mrs. Gertrude died of strangulation. Police said Gertrude was strangled to death with a bicycle chain, but this information has never been released. It was highly unusual for Tom to know this.

Plus, the first day the police searched Gertrude’s house, the only thing they couldn’t find was her checkbook. Police believe the killer took it to find out how much money Gertrude had.

But a few weeks later, Tom told Jane again that he had found the notebook in Mrs. Gertrude’s house. Tom even pointed out the exact location in the bedroom drawer. The police looked closely at the detailed photographs of the scene but did not find this notebook in the drawer. The investigator said that it is possible that Tom O’Donnell, when he learned that the police were looking for the notebook, put it in it.

After serving his sentence for fraud, Tom O’Donnell was released. Since being released from prison, Tom has moved in with a wealthy widow in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Jane and the police continue to pursue their goals.

Finally, Tom was also arrested on charges of first-degree murder. The authorities have collected enough evidence to prove that Tom was involved in the death of Mrs. Gertrude. He thinks that if this woman dies, Jane will inherit all of the property and of course he will also benefit.

In court, Jane became the main witness of the prosecution. She spent 13 years making her ex-boyfriend bow his head to confess.

After the 1996 trial, Tom O’Donnell was sentenced to life in prison with a term of 25 years to be eligible for parole.
