What are the signs to go to the hospital?

Severe cases increase

As of mid-April, TP. Ho Chi Minh City recorded nearly 4,500 cases of Dengue hemorrhagic fever, of which 109 severe cases are being treated at hospitals.

This is an alarming figure because in 2019, the year dengue broke out into an epidemic with more than 20,000 cases, the number of severe cases was only 38.

With the recent increase in the number of severe dengue cases, experts say there is a high possibility that the number of cases may be more than the number of recorded cases. The lower total number of recorded cases may be due to unreported mild cases. The city has also recorded 02 deaths from dengue fever. The cause of death was the patient’s late detection and hospitalization.

Assoc.Prof.Dr.BS Nguyen Vu Trung – Director of Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City said that this development is consistent with the epidemic cycle of dengue fever, an endemic disease of the City. It is forecasted that in 2022, dengue fever will be very complicated and the Health Sector needs to act immediately. The goal is to limit the number of severe cases and deaths as well as to prevent large outbreaks.

Signs of heavy transfer

At Children’s Hospital 2 is currently actively treating many dengue fever cases, including 2 severe cases using dialysis machines.

According to MSc Nguyen Dinh Qui, Deputy Head of Infection Department, Children’s Hospital 2, “Usually to identify a child with dengue fever is to have a high fever continuously for 3 to 4 days. If the child has a fever for 3 or more days, it is best to take the child to a medical facility for testing. blood test, for results and treatment plan”.

For cases where there is no indication for hospitalization, the child will be monitored and cared for at home. Parents should let children drink a lot of water, eat easy-to-digest foods and use drugs to improve their health and strengthen their resistance.

Dengue fever usually lasts for 7 days. However, the symptoms of fever in the first few days easily confuse parents with other diseases such as sore throat, viral fever or Covid-19.

Monitoring severe pediatric patients at the Covid-19 Infection Resuscitation Department, Doctor.CK2 Do Chau Viet, Dean of the Faculty, shared: “Besides, 90% of dengue fever cases are usually simple, only 10% will recover within a week. are the cases of severe transfer, mainly overweight and obese children or have underlying diseases such as heart disease, brain, lung, kidney, even post-Covid-19 cases.”

Therefore, parents need to promptly take their children to the hospital and follow the doctor’s instructions, to avoid being too late to progress badly and damage organs.

BSCK1. Huynh Ngoc Thien Vuong – Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases said that when there is a fever, the patient should go to the doctor for a proper diagnosis. Depending on the severity of the disease and the results of the tests, the patient may be guided to take medication, monitor and care at home. At any time of the day, patients need to be hospitalized if they have the following symptoms:

– Struggling, restless or sluggish, lethargic.

– Cold hands and feet.

– Abdominal pain, vomiting a lot.

– Bleeding teeth, nose bleeding, vomiting blood, black stools.

Patients will be examined, assessed for severity and treated appropriately. People need to avoid being late to the hospital, which leads to a long-term drop in blood pressure, excessive blood loss, and multi-organ damage that is difficult to recover from.

Dengue fever is transmitted from an infected person to a healthy person through mosquitoes. The continuous hot weather, mixed with sudden rains, is favorable for the generation of larvae and mosquitoes, increasing the risk of dengue fever. Each of us needs to act now to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Dengue fever prevention starts with small actions right from the family.

Small action, big effect

Each person, each family, and each agency implements killing of mosquito larvae and mosquitoes to prevent dengue fever:

Spend 10 – 15 minutes a week to clean up the place you work, live, from inside to around the house, clean up, don’t leave any stagnant water to create litter. Turn over old unused buckets, jars and bottles; clean and change water in flower vases, offerings at least once a week, clean eaves, roofs, gutters, etc.

Seal the jars, lakes, and drums with water when not in use to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs and generating larvae and mosquitoes.

For places where water is not used for drinking, activities can release fish to kill larvae.

Use spray, incense, mosquito repellant cream, wear long-sleeved clothes, sleep under the net even during the day… to avoid mosquito bites.
