In a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook published on April 20, US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioner Brendan Carr criticized Apple’s removal of apps from the App Store in China. He referred to Cook’s recent speech, describing privacy as a “fundamental human right” and Apple’s commitment to “protecting people from the data industry complex built up of surveillance.”

The letter said that Mr. Cook’s comments in the speech “understood the harsh realities of China”.

Mr. Carr’s anger appears to have stemmed from Apple’s blocking of an app that Mr. Carr said was an important tool for people to receive uncensored information. “I encourage Apple to evaluate its overall relationship with China, especially its extensive manufacturing operations there, to ensure that these relationships reflect Apple’s global values.”

Apple used to be closely watched for its activities in the world’s most populous country. In May 2021, The Information reported that 7 suppliers of “defective apples” here were linked to forced labor programs. In November of the same year, Mr. Cook asserted that Apple “has a responsibility” to do business everywhere it can, including China.
