Hacker attacking Axie Infinity was caught red-handed when dispersing ‘virtual currency’

At the end of March, the Ronin system of Sky Mavis – the studio that developed the game Axie Infinity was attacked by hackers. As a result of the incident, more than $620 million in cryptocurrency was stolen.

This amount includes 173,600 Ethereum and 25.5 million USDC. Part of the above money has recently been seized in the process of dispersal.

Specifically, in a recent announcement, exchange Binance said it had recovered $5.8 million that was believed to have originated from the attack on Axie Infinity last month.

Binance founder – billionaire Changpeng Zhao (CZ) said that the above money has been distributed to 86 different accounts to facilitate dispersal.

“The North Korean hacker group has started moving the stolen funds from Axie Infinity. Part of that went to Binance, spread across 86 accounts. $5.8 million was recovered. We’ve done this with other projects in the past as well,” said CZ.

This is just one of the actions taken by Binance in support of Axie Infinity. It was Binance who also led a $150 million funding round to help Sky Mavis – the parent company of Axie Infinity, recover from the aftermath of the cyber attack. Earlier, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that Lazarus Group was the hacker group responsible for the attack on the Ronin network.

Lazarus Group is a cybercriminal group with an unknown number of members. This group of hackers is known by various names and is believed to have ties to North Korea.
