Kien An: ‘I hate the abusive father in the Brilliant Night’

Playing the abuser of his wife and children in “Bright night!”, Kien An said that the more he hated the character, the more he had to focus on role-playing.

In independent film by American director Aaron Toronton, which hit theaters in early April, Kien An plays a father who beats his children when he is young, but when he defaults on his debt because of gambling, he has to ask his family to save him. The artist talked about his new role, as well as his thoughts when working in movies for more than 20 years.

– For the first time playing the role of an abusive father, how did you feel?

– In the original script, it was Mrs. Gai that was the violent character. I was invited by the filmmaker to audition for the role of a shy husband with a hint of humor. Then, director Aaron Toronto asked me to try playing the father because maybe he could see the villain in me. As a result, Mr. Toan’s character became a villain.

The film has many scenes of Mr. Toan pressing his wife’s country, chasing and beating his children… It is often said that you must love a character to act well. This role is the opposite, the more I hate to try to act, because Mr. Toan is the central character. If I fully immerse myself in the role, only then will my colleagues be able to maximize their acting.

– What is your favorite memory on the set?

– Most of the actors are brand new names. Outside Elegant scholarship portraying a depressed character, I was surprised by Kim B’s acting (as Kim Bao) because it was her first time acting in a movie. In the final sequence, the father and son had to film many violent scenes, to the point that I was angry with myself. Kim B’s face was swollen but always encouraged me, making me respect this girl’s endurance.

I also feel sorry for the child actor Ngan Chi. There was a scene where I chased and beat her with a rattan whip. When the group took a break, I didn’t see the props, everyone had to search everywhere and found that she hid it. Although Ngan Chi has protective equipment when acting, she is still afraid of me swinging the whip because I am too absorbed.

– More than 20 years into the profession, he plays the villain and the front, can make the audience both hate and love. How did he transform?

– I didn’t start acting until I was 40 years old. Being late to work, I think that I have a social understanding, a habit of observing life, so it is easy to play many types of roles. I am passionate about acting in all kinds of roles: villains, protagonists, comedians… For me, each role is a challenge.

For example, when I played the role of Seven Snakes in the TV series Cu Lao LuaI am Plum’s father (Oanh Kieu), the girl with a tragic fate. Father and son were oppressed by everyone, seeing their son being bullied, Seven Snakes carried a sickle and slashed Hai Ruong. This character is typical of an old farmer who despises the South – straightforward, old-fashioned but very emotional. When I put the father-son relationship into the role and live fully with the character, I create sympathy from the audience.

– Sticking to the acting career with a lot of supporting roles, what keeps you with movies?

– Although my income is meager, I am proud that my acting job has been supporting me and my family for a long time. Also, an important thing that has kept me going over the past twenty years is the love of the audience.

There was a time when I acted in three movies at the same time. I just turned Brilliant night! in Bien Hoa (Dong Nai), filming 30 is not Tet yet in Ho Tram (Ba Ria – Vung Tau), had to fly to Hue to participate in the event Very old girls V: Royal lives. Tired of traveling a lot, but in return, I was taken care of by my wife. Before becoming actors, my wife and I had a wedding photography shop. I took pictures, and my wife did the bridal makeup. We always support each other in our work. Even now, I go to film, my wife follows me as an assistant. I don’t like going out, except when I’m filming a movie, so we spend time together. I am lucky that my wife is always understanding and supportive.

My two children are grown, have stable jobs. My wife and I do not need to worry about economic problems. My oldest son is in Phu Quoc. The youngest daughter lives and works in Australia. Despite being far apart, the whole family always keeps in touch, loves and supports each other mentally.

– What do you think about the profession?

– I hope to have more opportunities to express myself in gentle roles. There was a time when I was called “Mr. Seven Snakes”. I appreciate that people are impressed with my character.

I also hope that the domestic cinema will have many films with the main character being an elderly person. I see that there is no shortage of foreign works telling the stories of middle-aged and elderly people, while domestic works do not have much land for this type of character. I don’t mind difficulties, I will act until I have no strength left.
