NASA wants to send a signal to reveal Earth’s position to aliens, scientists immediately warn

The late cosmologist Carl Sagan once confided: “Even if aliens are a small, stupid species, as long as they exist, I would love to know about them!”

Driven by the same mindset as Carl Sagan, an international team of scientists led by Nasa has developed a project to deliver a message to the center of the Milky Way.

The interstellar ballistic missile, called the Beacon in the Galaxy, was created to send a familiar message from Earth to space. This communication includes some basic concepts in mathematics and physics, the components that make up DNA, and information about people. Of course, the location of the Earth is also revealed, giving the opportunity for the aliens to respond if the message is received.

The message was sent from the 500 meter aperture Spherical Radio Telescope in China.

In a preliminary paper that has not yet been peer-reviewed, the scientists suggest sending this message to a dense ring of stars near the center of the Milky Way. The area is believed to be the most promising for the existence of extraterrestrial life.

This is not the first message sent from Earth. Beacon in the Galaxy is based on the Arecibo message sent in 1974 from an observatory of the same name in Puerto Rico. That time, the Arecibo message was aimed at the region of a star cluster about 25,000 light-years away. Because of the great distance, scientists do not expect to receive feedback anytime soon.

Interstellar communication efforts are far from straightforward. The odds that a large alien civilization can receive the message is extremely low. Even once a message is received, establishing effective methods of communication between two parties can be frustrating as a response can take tens of thousands of years to reach the other side.

Over the past several decades, many attempts to connect with alien life have been made by scientists.

In addition to the intense urge to explore, many professors have warned that humans should limit sending messages into space. Physicist Stephen Hawking points out: “If aliens exist and visit us, it will likely be like when Columbus discovered the Americas, which had disastrous consequences for native Americans. land”.

However, the Beacon in the Galaxy project development team believes that an alien species capable of interstellar communication is likely to have a high sense of the value of peace and cooperation. If there existed a species with such advanced technology, they and Earthlings were both adult species in the universe. Therefore, trying to discover and connect with extraterrestrial life offers a greater overall benefit than the possible risk ratio.
