Legend has it that the well is a part of princess Ngoc Hoa (daughter of the 18th Hung King, married to Son Tinh). This marriage led to a long-standing feud between Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh (the water god also proposed to Princess Ngoc Hoa). After the wedding, the mountain god Son Tinh brought Princess Ngoc Hoa to live in her native region (now Ba Vi land).
