Video shows how Apple’s Daisy robot disassembles iPhones for recycling
In 2018, Apple introduced “Daisy” – a robot capable of taking apart iPhones to recycle the device’s parts. However, its ability to function is still unknown to many people. Now, thanks to YouTuber Sara Dietschy, we can finally take a closer look at each step Daisy takes to carefully disassemble the iPhone.
Dietschy was invited to visit one of Apple’s facilities in Texas, where the company recycles its devices. The Daisy robot was developed specifically to disassemble iPhones, and Apple has previously said that the machine is capable of disassembling up to 200 iPhones per hour. One Daisy robot can recycle up to 1.2 million iPhones a year.
When the employee puts the iPhone in the machine, it will start taking all the components out of the device by itself. Daisy has four modules to separate iPhone parts and different materials on the device.
The first module is responsible for removing the display, while the second module separates the battery from the device. Since the battery is glued to the back of the iPhone, the robot uses extremely cold air to separate the adhesives. Then the third module unscrews the screws from the phone.
The fourth module places all components and parts on a conveyor belt so employees can put them in large bins. This process is important so that Apple can recycle metal and plastic from old devices and use them to manufacture new devices.
Daisy isn’t Apple’s first iPhone disassembler. Daisy was developed from Liam, another robot introduced by Apple in 2016 that was also created to disassemble iPhones. However, Liam is much larger and more complex, so Apple developed Daisy with a more compact and efficient design for use on a large scale.
