Which company sells the most imported cars in Vietnam?

Japanese automakers import cars to sell the most, led by Toyota and Mitsubishi, while Korean brands do not sell imported cars.

Along with assembling and importing CBU cars for sale in Vietnam is an important business segment of the firms. For popular cars, Indonesia and Thailand are the two main import places, while high-class cars have more diverse origins, such as Germany, UK, Italy, Mexico, USA, Malaysia…

The market has only three names that assemble cars (Kia, Hyundai, VinFast) but the number of net importers in the domestic market is much larger. This number includes Volkswagen, Subaru, Nissan, Jeep, MG and all luxury and high-class car brands (except Mercedes) such as Audi, BMW, Volvo, Porsche, Maserati… This is quite low sales compared to the general level of the market and the company does not publish specific sales figures.

In the case of Hyundai alone, the TC Motor distributor in the first quarter of 2022 imports Creta from Indonesia for sale (sales of 54 units) but is expected to assemble from 2023. The Korean brand’s business orientation is still assembly. assemble instead of import car.

Here are the sales statistics of imported cars sold in Vietnam by car brands:

Among the popular brands, Toyota is the company that most balances the business of two forms of imported and assembled vehicles. The imported car segment of the company is slightly better, accounting for about 55.5% of total car sales. In 2021, Toyota’s imported car sales are more than 37,300 vehicles, leading the market. In the first quarter of 2022, this position remained unchanged.

The Japanese joint venture currently has Vios and Innova assembled domestically, the remaining 15 models are imported from Indonesia, Thailand and Japan. Particularly, Fortuner has both assembled and imported with a larger share of the sales of cars made in Vietnam. Corolla CrossCamry or MPV Veloz Cross are currently the main imported car models of the company.

Mitsubishi ranked after Toyota in terms of imported cars for sale in Vietnam. Alone Xpanderthe Indonesian imported car model accounts for about 53% of the total sales of imported Japanese cars (23,240 vehicles) in 2021. Only this MPV model is imported from the land of ten thousand islands, the rest of the products (except Outlander and a small amount of Xpander) locally assembled) such as Triton, Attrage, Pajero Sport are imported from Thailand.

Net import business is the common point of Isuzu and Suzuki In the passenger car segment, sales are among the lowest in the market (only companies that publish sales data are counted). The factories of two Japanese firms in Vietnam only install commercial vehicles. Isuzu cars are imported from factories in Thailand, Suzuki is similar, except for Ertiga and XL7 enter Indonesia.

Mazda is the only popular brand under the distribution right of Truong Hai with imported cars appearing in the product list. Models such as BT-50, CX-3, CX-30, Mazda2 are all imported from Thailand with sales of nearly 7,000 vehicles in 2021, accounting for about 26% of Mazda’s total sales in Vietnam.

The company that sells imported cars closest to Mazda is Honda, with nearly 6,100 cars. Honda’s two main models, City and CR-V, are assembled domestically, while all other products such as Civic, Accord, HR-V, Brio, Jazz are imported from Indonesia and Thailand.

Moving the Ranger, the “golden egg” pickup model, to assemble in Vietnam, the Ford joint venture currently only has Everest and Explorer imported from Thailand and the US, respectively. Sales of these two models contribute a small part to Ford’s sales structure.
