Apple scans text messages for pornographic images on children’s iPhones

Apple scans messages for pornographic photos on children's iPhones - Photo 1.

Apple announced that a safety feature, which uses artificial intelligence to scan children’s incoming and outgoing messages, will soon be available in the UK. Parents will enable alerts on their child’s iPhone. When activated, all messages sent and received by a child in the Messages app will be scanned for nudity.

If an incoming message contains nudity, the photo will be blurred and the child alerted to sensitive content and directed to information from child safety groups. Conversely, if a child sends a message containing nudity, the same protections are in place and the child is encouraged not to send the photo; there’s also an option to “message adults”.

The entire scan is done on the device, which means that the iPhone analyzes the images on its own, and Apple never sees the analyzed photo or the results of the analysis. End-to-end encryption of the message is maintained. The feature is designed to make sure that no detectable nudity gets out of the device. Neither the parent nor anyone else received the notification, not even Apple.

Apple removed some controversial options before rolling out the update. In the original plan, the company suggested automatically alerting parents if children under the age of 13 send or receive nude images. In addition, the company also introduced a set of features to intervene when users search for child-exploiting content on Spotlight, Siri or Safari.

As announced in the summer of 2021, safety features in Messages and search alerts are among a trio of features that are expected to be available in the fall with iOS 15. The other feature scans photos before Upload to iCloud and report if child sexual exploitation images are found. However, Apple has delayed all three features while negotiating with children and privacy action groups.
