At least 10 people died in the sinking of a Japanese cruise ship

Japan Coast Guard announced at least 10 dead and 16 missing in the sinking of a cruise ship in the northeastern waters of the country.

In a statement on April 24, the Coast Guard Japan said it had discovered 10 victims on the Kazu 1 cruise ship, including 7 men and three women. “We have confirmed these 10 people are dead,” a Japanese coast guard spokesman said.

Train Kazu 1 signal called for help when water flooded the bow, causing the ship to sink. In the final statement, the crew said everyone on board was wearing life jackets and Kazu 1 then tilted 30 degrees.

When the accident occurred, the Kazu 1 was carrying 26 people, including a crew of two and 24 guests, including two children. Japanese authorities quickly launched a search and rescue operation, but hopes of finding survivors soon died out because Kazu 1 sank in an area with too low temperatures.

The Kazu 1 departed on the morning of April 23 following a popular sightseeing itinerary in the Shiretoko peninsula, a UNESCO world heritage site with unspoiled natural environment and diverse fauna. The tour took place despite high wind and high wave conditions. Many fishing boats in the area had previously returned to shore to avoid bad situations at sea.

“The weather conditions at sea were obviously going to get worse, so I told them not to depart, but the captain decided to go anyway,” said a local cruise ship operator.

Kazu 1 ship sent a distress signal at 13:15 (11:15 Hanoi time) on April 23. A few hours later, a helicopter and a Japanese Coast Guard ship arrived at the area where the Kazu 1 crashed. The local police and the Self-Defense Forces later joined the search and rescue operation.

The temperature in this sea drops to 0°C at night. Rescuers used infrared sensors to find victims. The first four people were brought ashore early on April 24, the other six were found a few hours later.

Japanese media reported that the Kazu 1 ran aground in June 2021 when carrying 21 passengers and two crew members. The ship then escaped from the shoal, and the captain was investigated by police for endangering traffic due to negligence in business activities.
