Explosive problem solving application for students

Receiving homework from an online class, Huy immediately opened the application on his smartphone, took a picture of the problem and found the solution, then copied it down.

Thanh Huy, a 9th grader in Ha Nam, said he has known about software to help solve homework for more than a year now, when he had to study online and interact more with smartphones. The applications support solving problems in many different subjects, such as Math, Physics, Chemistry, and English, but the most popular is still Math.

“Just take a picture of the problem, wait for the application to scan after a few seconds, the answer will be available on the screen”, Huy describes the application he is using. If the question has been asked before, the answer will be available. As for the problems that the teacher sets up and changes the data, Huy said that he will have to self-adjust according to the sample lesson, or post it in the form of “finding someone to help”. If someone accepts, he will get the answer, but in exchange for bonus points.

In Huy’s class, most of you also know these software. “Whoever has a smartphone can use it more. Some of you who don’t have a phone even have an Android emulator on your computer to install it,” Huy said.

Similarly, Thuy Hang (Hanoi) always has 3-4 applications to help solve exercises pre-installed in a folder on smartphones. When facing a difficult problem, Hang opens her phone to scan the problem, hoping to have a similar problem with the solution on the app.

“I can’t always ask my teachers, so I look for more references on the app,” said Hang, comparing these apps to reference books, but instead of searching manually, I can now find them by phone camera.

On the Play Store and App Store, the application that supports solving exercises has blossomed in the past year. For example, in mid-April, the Solvee app with the introduction “solve the exercise in five seconds is even in the top most downloaded apps on Android. In addition, a series of other applications such as Qanda, Dicamon, Gauthmath also became popular. common.

In the Education category of the Play Store, up to 5 of the 10 most downloaded apps are tools to help students solve homework. On the App Store for iPhone, this number is 4/10.

Ms. Thanh Hue, a middle school math teacher, said that the situation of students using problem solving software is increasingly common. “Maybe because of online learning, they have a lot of time to use computers and phones, from which to tinker and find support tools on the Internet.”

According to her, apps are built with good ideas, but can be abused and bring negative consequences. She once encountered a case where an average student solved an exercise at a high level of application. “I was both surprised and happy, thinking that she had made great progress. However, after asking her to re-solve and share how to do it, I discovered that she had found the software to solve the exercises,” she said.

This teacher said that the book or problem solving software is not bad if students use it correctly. Teachers can not always support and guide students immediately, so on the positive side, having tools to help approach the right solution brings many conveniences.

However, this teacher with more than 20 years of experience believes that problem solving software also causes more negative consequences. “In some of the classes I am in charge of, only 20-30% of students have self-discipline. Those children who have access to problem-solving software can turn it into a tool to support them. But with 70-80 The remaining % will quickly copy the solution, then fold the book and go out,” she said, worried that this will make students dependent on software, lazy to think and lose the root of knowledge.

The director of an EdTech company in Hanoi said that problem solving software is actually a good idea in the context of the need to promote digital transformation of education. However, these software need to be limited in order for students to use it properly.

“The positive point is that the software has developed a solution to recognize handwriting, including handwriting or symbols accurately, and connect a network of tutors, teachers, or even use AI to provide the solution,” this person said. “If students use this as a guide to solving in a textbook, it’s fine, but if used to do homework on their own, or in competitions, it will be harmful to the student.”

In addition, if the application has not been optimized for scanning, it may lead to misidentification and make the answer “off-topic”. On the evaluation of some problem solving applications, many users said that they have encountered the above situation.

“Nowadays, students are very sensitive to information technology, teachers sometimes can’t keep up with them, so it is impossible to ban the use of problem solving software. I think families and schools need to pay attention and limit time. Time to use electronic devices, advice and encouragement for students to think and work on their own instead of looking for support tools,” said Ms. Hue.
