Get rich by raising chickens

Ha TinhIn the first two years of losing more than 200 million VND, Mr. Tran Thanh Nhan, 35 years old, once thought that his decision to give up his salary of 12 million VND and return to his hometown to open a chicken farm was wrong.

Graduating from the Faculty of Economics of Da Lat University in 2010, Mr. Nhan, residing in Lam Hop commune, Ky Anh district, works as a business supervisor for a shrimp noodle company, with a monthly salary of 12 million VND. At that time, the above income was considered good, but he was not satisfied. Many times when driving a motorbike around all day on the road, Nhan thought “I can’t work forever”, must build something for himself. Parents have 5 hectares of hilly land, he has a plan to explore, but does not know “what to plant, what to raise”.

Married in 2016, Nhan has now quit his job as a business supervisor for the business, discussed with his wife Nguyen Thi Thuy, 31 years old, starting a business by building Hoa Binh curry chicken farm. The idea above he came across by accident a year ago, when a company in Nghe An surveyed and found a partner to build a cattle barn under the model of association and product consumption.

Initially, when he negotiated with the business, he planned to raise cows, but seeing that the capital was large and the feasibility was not high, he decided to choose chickens. Thuy said: “I support two hands”. However, parents and relatives objected because “I have never seen anyone do it before, so there is no place to hide at a loss”.

With an initial capital of 100 million dong for the wedding, Nhan went to the bank to pledge a red cover of a 5-hectare piece of forest land, and borrowed another 700 million dong from relatives with the determination to “do something good”. When the 1,200 m2 large barn system was built, Mr. Nhan paid 200 million VND to the business to receive 5,000 Hoa Binh curry chickens to raise, when the weight was reached, the business would buy them. In addition, he also built concrete roads in and out of the farm, built a number of barns for cows and pigs to sell quarterly to cover living expenses.

Although he spent time learning about chicken raising models in many places in the province, Nhan shared that he still could not grasp all the techniques, so he applied them incorrectly. As a rule, 3 months old chickens weighing 1.6 kg or more are qualified. However, the first time the animal did not gain weight despite being raised for 4-5 months, in addition to many diseases and then died. September 2017, Typhoon Doksuri swept the Ky Anh district, tore off the roof of the entire barn, many walls fell. It took him and his wife many days to clean up, spend more money to hire workers to renew the system.

“The first two years lost more than 200 million VND. Every month, he borrowed more than ten million VND to pay interest, electricity and water, poultry feed…”, Mr. Nhan said. Many nights tossing and turning, lying with his hand on his forehead, he thought to himself, “Or am I wrong to give up my salary of 12 million VND per month to take risks?”. The intention to give up raising chickens once appeared, but he could not answer the important question he also thought of: “If I return to my old job, my salary will be enough to pay interest, so what does my wife and children live for? I don’t know what year to pay off the original debt?”.

“You need to be patient and try. Everything you know before you can succeed before you start doing it, it must only be in a dream,” Mr. Nhan recalls his words of reassurance in the midst of fluctuating thoughts in 2018. .

Realizing that the chickens died due to improper care, Nhan went online to learn methods from reputable breeding websites. According to him, chickens often suffer from diseases such as gum, asthma, enteritis, coccidiosis, etc. Later, thanks to the application of drugs, combined with scientific and technical methods, the diseases of chickens are gradually overcome. regime.

From 2019 onwards, the chickens on the farm started to grow well, giving the weight up to the agreed standards. In this year, he exported 3 litters of chickens, each litter was about 5,000 chickens, minus all expenses, reached a net profit of 120 million VND. “The couple looked at each other with tears in their eyes, very touched when the family’s model began to make money after more than two years of hardship, sometimes it seemed like giving up,” Nhan said.

To date, Mr. Nhan has invested about VND 1.5 billion for the camp. The barn is equipped with biological mattress, feeder, light, generator, automatic drinking system, cool fan in summer, gas heating for poultry in winter… Chickens raise 6 litters a year, a litter of 10,000 chickens, each one day old weighs 40 grams. After three months, chickens reach 1.6-1.8 kg, then sold to the company once. In addition, every day he also drives a car to transport chickens to markets, restaurants, and partners in the province.

“Total sales a year is about 2.4 billion dong. After deducting expenses, the profit is about 500 million dong,” Nhan said. Hoa Binh curry chicken is beautiful, purebred grass chicken, delicious meat, popular in the market. In addition to chickens and cows, they also have a steady income, selling 5 cows a year, earning tens of millions of dong.

Nhan’s family has a small child and built a house on the farm to live. The work here is mainly handled by him, his wife is a judicial officer of Lam Hop commune, when not busy with agency work, she helps her husband. Every day, he always wakes up at 6am to feed the chickens, clean the plastic troughs… In his free time, he cuts grass for the cows and cooks pig bran. Finish work before 9am in the morning, and at 4pm in the afternoon. Disinfectant will be sprayed once a week to ensure hygiene of the barn.

“Raising chickens is like a woman taking care of young children, always worried. When visiting the coop and seeing the chickens are healthy, I am also healthy. If they get sick, my body will be the same as a sick person’s. Only when the litter is finished will the new chickens come out. relieved,” Nhan said.

Currently, the start-up loans have been paid off, the young couple has a good economy and has accumulated. Mr. Nhan bought more pickup trucks and many expensive household items to serve the family’s travel and living needs. At this time, due to Covid-19, the associated farming business faced difficulties, and the product sold to the market was slow, so Mr. Nhan temporarily shelved the plan to open more cages, the epidemic will continue.

Mr. Pham Thai Phuong, Vice Chairman of Lam Hop Commune Farmers’ Association, said that Mr. Tran Thanh Nhan is a pioneer in the area who knows how to take advantage of hill gardens for animal husbandry and economic development. “Spending billions to build a chicken farm requires the owner to be brave and calculating. His boldness initially brought success. This is a model for many young people to pursue the idea of starting a business in Vietnam. homeland, instead of working as a hired worker in a faraway place,” said Phuong.
