Scientists are still not sure what causes this disease. They suspect the impact of a virus.

The common cold virus called adenovirus has been detected in at least 74 cases. In addition, 20 children were infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. 19 children were infected with both viruses.

Adenovirus usually causes mild symptoms including colds, vomiting, and diarrhea. Most people recover without complications.

Some experts believe that children’s weakened immune systems after repeated periods of time apart may be a factor in the condition.

US health officials have sent warnings to doctors nationwide to watch out for symptoms of hepatitis in children, which may be linked to the cold virus.

In the UK alone, out of more than 100 cases of mysterious hepatitis in children, up to 8 children need a liver transplant.

Dr Meera Chand, Director of Infections at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), said: “We are working with the National Health Service and our public health colleagues in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to rapidly investigate a range of factors that predispose children to hospital admissions with hepatitis.”

“The information gathered through our investigations suggests an association with adenovirus. However, we are thoroughly investigating other potential causes.”

“Common hygiene practices, such as good hand washing and thorough respiratory hygiene, help reduce the spread of many common infections, including adenovirus. We urge parents and guardians to be alert for signs of hepatitis and to contact a hospital if concerned.”

Symptoms of hepatitis include dark urine, gray stools, itchy skin, jaundice, fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, and muscle and joint pain.

The disease is usually caused by hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses. But in the newly discovered pediatric cases, none of these viruses were found.

Dr Kimberly Marsh, an epidemiologist at Public Health Scotland, said children’s immune systems could be weakened by the limitations of the pandemic.
