German news agency DPA Citing police, the protest took place on the afternoon of April 23 local time in the village of Luetzerath, about 40km west of Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia state. About 2,000 people participated.

The protest occurred when the last farmer of the village was evicted from his home. They were forced to sell their property to the RWE Utilities Company after losing a court case.

According to News Agency AP, the village is still home to environmental activists. Some have built treehouses, to prevent the expansion of the nearby Garzweiler coal mine.

Climate activists say the village and other nearby villages should not be demolished, as burning coal in the ground undermines Germany’s efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Some German officials explain that in order to reduce Russian fossil fuel imports in the short term, Germany needs to rely on other energy sources, including lignite mined at Garzweiler.

The coal-fired power plants near the Garzweiler mine are among the largest emitters of carbon dioxide in the European Union.

Recent opinion polls show that voter support for the Green Party has increased significantly ahead of regional elections in May this year in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where there is the Garzweiler coal mine.

In 2018, Germany closed all coal mines In 2018, Germany closed all coal mines

TTO – Germany will close its remaining eight coal mines in 2018 under a plan to “kill” an industry that has contributed much to the country’s industrial revolution.
