Suffering from spondylitis, however, Ms. NTH, 27 years old, living in Dak Lak province, did not receive treatment according to the doctor’s regimen, but took male medicine for 4 months, leading to heavy metal infection.

Through medical history, from 2019, the female patient discovered that she had ankylosing spondylitis. The patient had visited the Department of Musculoskeletal Medicine at Cho Ray Hospital and was given medication by the doctors.

However, after listening to the advice of a neighbor that “with ankylosing spondylitis, taking male medicine is better than western medicine”, Ms. H. switched to taking male medicine.

After 4 months of using male medicine, not only did her ankylosing spondylitis condition improve, but Ms. H also had prolonged diarrhea, edema, and exhaustion… Progression of the disease was getting worse and worse. When she went to Cho Ray Hospital for screening, the doctors discovered that Ms. H. had a very severe intestinal ulcer. The Department of Musculoskeletal Medicine, Cho Ray Hospital, and anti-toxic expert – MSc Doan Uyen Vy came to consult and examine together to find out the cause.

“After testing the patient, we diagnosed Ms. H. with heavy metal poisoning from herbal medicine. We asked the patient to stop taking the male medicine to cut off the source of the poison. Next is a long course of treatment to deal with the consequences of the ulcer. However, this heavy metal poisoning has left a rather severe sequelae, which is the loss of protein through the intestines. Therefore, the patient was forced to receive albumin and protein infusion every day for 2 years, which was very expensive,” said MSc Doan Uyen Vy.

Ms. H. said that her family had to “bite her teeth” to give her more than 1 million dong of medicine per day for the past 2 years.

“At that time, even though it was very expensive, the drug only helped me maintain eating and sleeping. I can’t do other activities because every time I exercise, I feel tired and dizzy. So, for 2 years, I almost just stayed at home and waited until it was time to give the medicine,” recalls Ms. H.

Poisoned from the drug happens silently

According to MSc Doan Uyen Vy, at present, Cho Ray Hospital has an antidote for heavy metals and after 3 days of infusion of the antidote, patient H. has recovered, is healthy again, no longer lost condition. protein through the intestinal tract, thereby ending the need to transmit albumin and protein every day…

“This is one of the typical disease cases that are heavily affected by improper drug use. The poisoned from the drug happens silently and manifests as a medical disease that is not always easy to find the cause”, MSc Doan Uyen Vy shared.

After finding out the cause, the doctors of the Anti-Poison Clinic collaborated with internists to find out the cause and completely solve the disease for the patient.
