3m-long king squid washed ashore, Japanese experts are afraid of tsunamis
A few days ago, at a beach in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, a giant squid, also known as king squid, was found about 3m long, washed ashore by waves. There was also a case of giant squid washed up on the coast of Japan in the past, but by the time it was discovered, the squid was already dead. This time, the king squid miraculously survived, causing public opinion to be stirred up again.
According to Japan’s “Kyodo News Agency”, the king squid was found on the beach in Obama city, Fukui prefecture on April 20. Witnesses said they saw the giant creature bobbing and moving on the beach where the waves were crashing. Looking closer, they discovered that it was indeed a living king squid.
According to the first person to discover the king squid, at that time he saw something very large moving, approached to see what it was, unexpectedly it was a giant king squid. Immediately after, the news spread, attracting many people to watch, everyone was surprised and exclaim: “It’s really too big, I didn’t expect it to be a giant squid, and it’s still alive.”
The giant king squid washed ashore this time is estimated to weigh 80kg, with a total length of 3.35m, belonging to a giant squid species that usually lives in the deep sea with a depth of 500 to 1,000 meters. This species is also known as the largest invertebrate in the world, extremely rarely washed ashore while alive. According to the people of Fukui Prefecture, this is the second time the giant squid has washed up on the local beach
Worth mentioning, contrary to the excitement of the people, some earthquake experts expressed concern, saying that deep-sea creatures when rising to the surface and drifting ashore are often related to earthquakes. Specifically, according to a report by “Sankei Shimbun Daily”, on February 13, 2016, a giant king squid with a length of more than 3m was found off the coast of Akita Prefecture, the very next day, a strong earthquake 3 on the Richter scale occurs in this locality.
Regarding the case of the king squid discovered this time, it will be brought to the exhibition at the Echizen Matsushima Aquarium in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture in the near future.
