This person started showing symptoms on April 5. After self-treating at home for more than a week, the patient was hospitalized special care department for people infected with Ebola on April 21.

The patient died later, the same day. He was properly buried to minimize the risk of the virus continuing to spread. The medical facility where the patient is being cared for has also been disinfected.

Authorities are tracing more than 70 people who had contact with the patient.

Regarding this case, on April 23, the World Health Organization (WHO)’s regional director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti emphasized: “Time is not on our side. The case has started two times. week and now we’re playing catch-up. The good news is that the health authorities in Congo have more experience than anyone in the world in rapidly controlling Ebola.”

Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO director, said that Ebola vaccination will be deployed in the next few days. Congo will send vaccines from the national reserve to the localities.

Dr Moeti said many people in Mbandaka have been vaccinated against Ebola, so the impact of the epidemic will be reduced. In addition, those who have been vaccinated since the 2020 outbreak will receive a booster shot.

News of the new Ebola case comes just four months after the last Ebola outbreak in Congo. The country has experienced 14 Ebola outbreaks since 1976, when Ebola first appeared.

The Ebola virus was first detected near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976.

The Ebola virus is spread by contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or a surface that has the virus on it. Initial symptoms are muscle aches and fever.

The largest Ebola outbreak to date was the one in West Africa from December 2013 to January 2016, with 28,646 cases and 11,323 deaths. Mortality rates ranged from 25-90% in previous outbreaks.

Current treatments have dramatically improved Ebola patients’ chances of survival. However, the post-Ebola effects linger even after recovery, including muscle aches, eye and vision problems, and stomach upset.
