Britain’s first self-driving bus goes to road tests in Scotland

Stagecoach London, a major bus operator in Greater London, will conduct the test self-driving bus on the road from April 25 to prepare for the official passenger transport later this summer.

Sam Greet, the company’s regional manager for Scotland, describes: “This is a hugely exciting project. It’s a huge step forward in our journey to fully launching the UK’s first full-size self-driving bus service and will provide easy access to a brand new bus line in the heart of Scotland”.

In CAVForth’s pilot plan, 5 self-propelled bus a deck that will operate across various parts of Scotland, including the Forth Road Bridge between Ferrytoll Park and Ride in Fife and the train and tramway intersection in Edinburgh Park.

Buses will have a full range of sensors that will help them run on pre-programmed routes without the driver needing to intervene or control.

Once passengers start boarding, the bus will provide a service capable of carrying a minimum of 36 people across the bridge over a distance of at least 14 miles (about 22 km), with a capacity of 10,000 passengers a week.
