Car crashes into police in Paris, two dead

Paris police opened fire on a car that disobeyed orders, killing two people in an incident that happened after French President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected.

AFP on April 25 reported the incident happened at the Pont Neuf bridge in central Paris. The car was traveling in the opposite direction on the bridge and was stopped by the police.

The driver is said to have stopped the car, but while checking the documents, he pressed the gas to rush the car into the police.

One person in the car opened fire. Police forces then opened fire in response, killing two people in the car and injuring a third. Authorities have opened an investigation into the attempted manslaughter attempt to target law enforcement officers.

The incident came amid protests in central Paris and many other cities, after President Emmanuel Macron of the Republican Progressive Party (LREM) reelected.

Riot police used tear gas to disperse crowds in Paris, mostly young people.

According to data released by the French Ministry of the Interior, Mr Macron won 58.5% of the vote while rival Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally (RN) party got 41.4%.

Mr. Macron won by a safe margin, but the gap has narrowed since the match between the two in 2017.

On the other hand, the percentage of voters absent in this round was up to 28%, the highest number in a single election presidential election in the second round since 1969 because many people are not willing to vote for Mr. Macron and Mrs. Le Pen.
