Due to incompetence or too delusional about your own degree?

Someone once told me: “If you are not born into a family with such power, economic conditions are not in the form of wealth, you will easily be asked the opposite question when going to an interview: Why go to a normal university?”. Because more or less, in the eyes of many people, getting a degree from top schools such as Foreign Trade, Polytechnic, Hanoi Medicine… is still more valuable than equivalent degrees from a relatively unknown school. . But whether the truth is true, let’s see how time will tell.

Many years ago, I happened to meet a student, he said his passion was to pass the entrance exam to the Information Technology department of a top university. However, a few months later, his university exam scores did not allow him to enter the right major and dream school. So, under the “direction” of his homeroom teacher and his family, he still filled in his wish to be that top school, but his major was changed to four words: Bioengineering.

The student still maintains a good academic record. He even went on to study for a Master’s degree with a major of his choice. However, after graduating, he realized that he was not suitable for a job in the field of Bioengineering, and began to find a new direction in his old passion of Information Technology.

Although in college, he still tinkered with knowledge about computers or programming by himself, but the gap between him and major students was still very far. He said, the time of applying to the top 5 technology companies in the capital, even though he graduated with a Master’s degree from a top university, it was not a “ticket” to help him receive this award. Business owner nods.

During a talk with only friends, he confided to me that he regretted spending so much time in his youth on a major he didn’t like. He regretfully told about a friend who graduated from an unknown school, but now starts a technology company by himself.

After all, it’s hard to give good advice or answer your friend’s story. If you go back to the time when you were 18 years old, you still have the desire to enroll in the Faculty of Information Technology, of a prestigious school, but the score is “easier”, would you still sit here complaining to me about life? after that?

Of course, I never got an answer. But at least, I believe with his self-study and that passion, he can easily get a job in the field he loves, without having to struggle to rebuild his career at the age of 30.

And of course, my friend is not the only case among countless students who came out of top universities and suddenly “disappeared” from the labor market.

Is the college entrance exam a child’s “way to school” or a parent’s dream?

I have an acquaintance who works in the admissions committee of the university. Every year, around April and May, her phone seems to “explode” because of hundreds of calls from many parents asking for information about faculties, consulting on choosing a major, choosing a school for their children. A job that should have belonged to the students.

Or there are many cases where candidates have enough scores to get into prestigious schools, but in the process of taking the exam, they are confused about whether to choose a passion major or a safe major.

I want to study humanities, intending to study for a doctorate after graduation, but my parents find this industry not “safe”, it is very difficult to find a job in the future. On the contrary, economics is a profession that is always at the top of the school, so they require their children to study economics. Because there was no voice in the family, the child immediately gave up his passion and registered his wish to follow his parents.

After all, which parent does not love and want to give the best for their children. But are many parents interfering too deeply in the right to decide the future of young people?

In fact, if many years ago, the child’s academic results were not good, the family may accept that the child attend a top 2 or top 3 university or a vocational school is also a worthy choice. However, in reality, few parents are easily satisfied when their children enroll in a bad school.

Despite many articles, or media reports about the case of top students falling into unemployment, universities with high standards still occupy the top positions in the application dossiers of many people. Candidates. It is undeniable that when students study at these schools, they will have more privileges than priority, such as educational environment, competitive learning atmosphere every day, or… a little pride in being a student. top school.

But as more and more university graduates enter the labor market, making this market saturated, the talent selection criteria of enterprises will become more stringent and strict. At that time, employers look at not only your degree, but also the number of years of experience, leadership ability, foreign language skills… and many other factors.

In recent days, by chance, I know a quite famous YouTuber guy, from an untrained student to a business manager for about 5 years. He used to say: “A university degree is just a ticket for you to pass… the CV round. If you want to go for a long time, the most important thing is still internal strength.” At the age of 27, the guy continues to study for a Master’s degree with his current job, achieves an ideal salary and is self-sufficient in an expensive city life.

Of course, with each profession, there are different standards and requirements in the work. But one thing that many graduates have told me, turns out that a university degree from a top school is not that important. If you are not willing to cultivate yourself, love enough to continue walking despite the bright and dark parts of the industry, perhaps “disappearing” from the labor market is not too difficult to understand.

That winter, my friend was still determined to rebuild his career in the field of information technology with empty hands. But when he started applying to technology companies, he was secretly glad that he was able to leave the factory job with colleagues who did not share the same opinion. And more importantly, he still has a chance to correct his mistakes and not let disappointment take over him and continue to do what he thinks is best.

So for parents or students who are about to enter the upcoming university exam, what can you do? Simply, each student should bravely follow the direction they want to choose. It’s good to listen to the opinions of the people who came before, but consider what is the job you want to stick with and invest in it for a long time.

Besides, parents also need to learn to respect their children’s decisions, so that they can choose their own first steps when they grow up. Know that it is difficult to ask parents to dare to accept all of their children’s dreams. But if they can’t do that, they won’t be able to give their best effort with their choice, and ultimately live a good life without regrets.
