According to AFP news agency, on April 25, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that the Russia-Ukraine conflict risks escalating into World War 3. He made the remarks a day after senior US officials visited Kiev and said Ukrainian forces could repel Russian forces.
Based on the current tense situation, Foreign Minister Lavrov said that the risk of World War III is “real”. “This risk is real. You should not underestimate it,” Lavrov told Interfax news agency.
In an interview with Russian television reposted on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on the same day, Lavrov said that the supply of weapons by NATO member states to Ukraine means a military alliance. This incident “essentially participated in the war with Russia”, and Moscow considers these weapons to be legitimate targets.
According to Al Jazeera, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba criticized his Russian counterpart Lavrov for warning of a “real” danger of World War III.
On Twitter, Kuleba said that Lavrov’s comments only showed “Russia feels defeated”. He also called on the world to increase support for Ukraine to ensure European and global security.
Also speaking to Russian media, Foreign Minister Lavrov also criticized Kiev’s approach to negotiations between the two sides. He added: “Goodwill has its limits. Without reciprocity, that doesn’t help the negotiation process.”
“But we are continuing to participate in negotiations with the delegation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and these contacts will continue,” Lavrov said.
