Suffering from Covid-19, a student with nerve damage
Patient is TGH, male, 13 years old, living in Tra Vinh province. During the 6 days of illness, H. had mild fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, poor appetite. After that, she was admitted to the local hospital in a state of shock: lethargy, cool limbs, light pulse, sweating, breathing 50 times/minute. Rapid test for SARS-CoV-2 was positive.
After receiving oxygen, intravenous fluids, and vasopressors, H. was transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) for emergency. According to Dr. Nguyen Minh Tien, deputy director of the hospital, here she is still sluggish, breathing pulling.
Blood tests showed severe metabolic acidosis, increased blood lactic acid levels, increased inflammation, and elevated liver enzymes. The doctor diagnosed that the patient had septic shock, sepsis, severe pneumonia, liver damage, Covid-19.
H. has respiratory support, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibiotic, anticoagulant, electrolyte adjustment…. Nearly 2 weeks later, the condition gradually improved, the test for SARS-CoV-2 was also negative. However, by the 3rd week, she had a fever again, red eyes and skin, unsteady walking, headache.
Tests showed an increased inflammatory response in the blood. And brain MRI showed bilateral thalamus lesions, cerebellar white matter lesions. Doctor diagnosed, the patient has multi-system inflammatory syndrome, brain damage. H. is treated with high-dose anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant to prevent thrombosis.
A week later, the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital.
“This is a rare case, children with Covid-19 have severe liver damage and then develop multi-system inflammatory syndrome with neurological damage,” said Dr.
The deputy director of the City Children’s Hospital also recommended that, to help children avoid serious risks of contracting Covid-19, parents should take their children to get vaccinated according to the program.
Parents need to carefully prepare their children before getting vaccinated, share with them the benefits of vaccination, and encourage them not to worry, just like getting other vaccines.
