Why are refurbished phones increasingly popular?

After all, this is an opportunity to buy iPhone or the same Samsung flagship at a lower price. For example, a few days ago, the Korean giant started selling refurbished models of the Samsung Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra. The appeal of such devices is that they have been checked and repaired by the company’s specialists to “like-new” condition.

After analyzing the past year’s figures, analysts at Counterpoint Research have concluded that sales of refurbished smartphones have increased by 15% compared to 2020. This is happening on the background of the fact that new mobile device market. There are people who love to buy a new phone model but there are also people who decide to save a bit of money and buy a refurbished device.

Commenting on the growth in refurbished phones, senior analyst Glen Cardoza said: “Refurbished smartphones are part of a broader pool of pre-owned devices that will re-enter the information system. Refurbished phones sold by more than 10% globally in 2021. We see an increase year-over-year in developing markets like China Countries, India, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa. ASP (average selling price) of refurbished smartphones increased slightly as 4G devices remained flat”.

The most active refurbished smartphone purchases are in Latin America; where the growth is 29% against the sales base in 2020. In second place is India with 25% increase and third is the US with 15%. China is still the largest market in the world. Against the background of increasing demand for remanufactured devices, manufacturers will begin to actively participate in this field. Currently, prominent in this phone segment are two cult technology companies Apple and Samsung.

Latin America and India led the way with the highest growth, at 29% and 25% respectively. Even the US, China and Europe regions have shown strong growth in volume since 2020.
