Why should you not use mothballs at home?

Moth is used by many people to repel cockroaches, termites, even some Western countries use mothballs to repel bats, squirrels, mice…

According to the US National Pesticide Information Center, the pungent chemical smell of mothballs not only penetrates the nose but can also cause headaches and be harmful to humans. Also, because of their candy-like shape, they can be mistaken for food and can be swallowed by children or pets, leading to poisoning or health problems.

Mothballs are made from two main ingredients, naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene. Research from Oregon State University, USA shows that mothballs work by releasing chemicals into the air. If you smell it, chances are you’re inhaling hazardous substances, which can lead to headaches, shortness of breath, and even nausea. Once that smell spreads through the air, it can seep into your furniture, clothing, and floors and be difficult to remove.

Studies show that people exposed to mothballs for a long time, many times in the form of vapors or dust have adverse effects on the eyes. In particular, mothballs can cause cataracts. Pregnant women when exposed to mothballs through inhalation or ingestion can lead to anemia in the baby.

The Department of Health and Hospitals recommends that you do not store mothballs in closets, drawers, or other rooms in your home. In case you must use mothballs, keep them in an airtight container. If your items have been exposed to mothballs, they should be washed thoroughly so there is no risk of inhaling chemicals.
