Discover 1,700-year-old sandals in a remote mountain in Norway

A hiker accidentally found antique sandals in the Horse Ice Patch area during his trip. He contacted the researchers, sending the location and photos to the center to preserve the items found in the ice for them to visit the scene.

Espen Finstad, who led the study, said the discovery of Iron Age sandals on a mountain in Norway provides further evidence that the site was once a heavily used road. about 1,700 years ago.

When Espen Finstad and his team arrived on the scene to collect the slipper and look for more artifacts, heavy snow was forecast. If covered with snow, Espen Finstad will have to wait many years until the ice melts to regain it. The snow here was thick and the temperature was very low, and his team had to work hard all day long.

Luckily they completed the job smoothly. Using radioactive carbon, the team calculated the age of the slippers, which were dated to around 300 AD.

The icy road through the mountains connects the interior of Norway with the sea, a road people use a lot to travel and transport goods. To make it easier to move on ice, the ancients used scraps of cloth or animal skin inside the slipper.

Espen Finstad said: “Today’s wild, desolate, icy mountain landscape was a prehistoric route of heavy traffic, with many traces of humans. People at that time weren’t afraid to move across. difficult and dangerous mountainous areas. They have to travel long distances to exchange and exchange goods.”

The sandals tended to be inspired by the fashions of the Roman Empire, which indicates that people walking across the Norwegian mountains were exposed to the outside world.

Espen Finstad’s team also discovered many other items on the road such as arrowheads and shafts dating back to between 2,000 and 3,000 years. These serve as proof that many hunters frequent this site. They use reindeer as a means of transportation.

There are still not many traffic related discoveries in this mountain. In the nearby Lendbreen Pass, the researchers found a number of footwear, but none older than this time.
