EVN: Need an attractive mechanism to buy electricity from Laos

Information from the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) said that it is expected that by 2025, Vietnam will buy electricity from Laos with a minimum of 3,000 MW and increase to 5,000 MW by 2030, according to the commitment between the two governments. government. Power plants in Laos will sell electricity directly to EVN’s power grid and transmit electricity to Vietnam.

According to EVN, the purchase of electricity from Laos is one of the solutions to ensure electricity for the northern provinces in the summer, given the fact that new power sources expected to be completed annually in the period 2022-2025 are calculated to be always low. than load growth.

This makes it increasingly difficult to ensure electricity supply and there may be a peak capacity shortage in the North in May-July, when the heat is at the end of the dry season. hydroelectric plant is down…

In addition to importing electricity from Laos, Vietnam also considers importing electricity from China.

According to Power Plan VIII, each year Vietnam will import about 700 MW and 3.5 billion kWh of electricity. In the high-load scenario, an additional 1,000 MW and 5.5 billion kWh/year can be purchased to compensate for about 1,000 MW of gas thermal power (LNG) in the North in the reserve capacity…
