Saigon’s long-standing zoo escapes losses thanks to support money

Ho Chi Minh CityThanks to donations from the people and support from the city budget of more than 26 billion, the Zoo and Botanical Garden escaped losses and profit after tax last year of nearly 550 million.

The financial report of Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden shows that last year’s business results were strongly affected by the closure of epidemic prevention for more than half a year. The company recorded last year revenue of 45 billion dong, down 36% year-on-year. After deducting cost of goods, this business has a gross loss of 17 billion dong, while in the same period last year this item was less than one billion dong.

Thanks to the budget of Ho Chi Minh City, supporting more than 13 billion VND to maintain and develop trees, take care of animals affected by the epidemic and 13.5 billion VND donated by people to rescue and conserve wild animals. Wild that the Zoo and Botanical Garden escaped. The company reported a profit after tax for the whole year of approximately VND 550 million.

By the end of last year, the Zoo and Botanical Garden had assets of more than 750 billion VND. Most of these are unfinished assets of the Saigon Safari project. The company only owes 7 billion dong, or less than 1% of total capital.

Botanical Garden was built in 1864 with the original name of Botanical Garden. It is one of the 10 oldest zoos in the world.

This place is considered as a museum of biology with thousands of species of flora and fauna in Vietnam and the world being cultivated. Currently, Zoo and Botanical Garden has a huge collection of about 4,000 plants of plant species and over 600 individuals of rare animals.

Before 2010, the company was a state-owned enterprise under the Department of Transport, but then transformed into a one-member limited liability company managed by the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. Since 2015, the Zoo and Botanical Garden has operated with complete financial autonomy, with no budget support. The company’s main source of revenue comes from ticket sales.
