Stingray jumps out of the water to avoid hammerhead sharks

Diver Carlos Roberto Castro Tadeo recorded the sight of a hammerhead shark hunting a stingray in the waters off Isla de las Golondrinas, Cozumel, Mexico, on April 15. In the video, the stingray jumps out of the water several times to escape the shark’s jaws.

“We were sailing in the area quite far from shore called Cielito when we came across a hammerhead shark chasing a stingray. They swam right under the boat and we were all very impressed.” , Tadeo recounted.

At first, when an animal flew into the air, the tour group thought it was a dolphin. However, they quickly recognized rays and sharks as they got closer. The shallow and clear water allowed them to observe the chase of two sea creatures. According to Tadeo, the shark then tore off the stingray’s tail and ate it. He didn’t come back because of the “lots of blood” scene.

Tadeo said the water was only about 2 meters deep and their captain had not seen a hammerhead shark in such shallow water in 30 years. The captain speculated that the hunter might have been chasing prey from deeper to shallower waters. The coast of Isla de las Golondrinas has many stingrays and rarely occurs hammerhead sharks.

Stingray (Myliobatoidei) generally favors warm, nearshore waters around the world. Here, they spend most of their time burying part of their body on the sea floor, hiding from predators like sharks, or waiting for prey to swim by. Their color is often mixed with the color of mud or sand where they hide. The prey of the stingray includes animals such as oysters, oysters, shrimp, crabs and mussels.
