The price of animal feed increased, the price of pigs was low, many raising households quit their jobs

Many livestock farmers abandoned barns

Since the Lunar New Year, the livestock industry continues to face many difficulties when the prices of input materials for production continuously increase. For this reason, the price of animal feed for livestock, poultry and finished aquatic products also increased from 3 to 13%.

Comparing March of this year with March 2021, the cereal group increased sharply. For example, corn kernels increased by nearly 30%, soybeans increased by more than 33%, maize residues increased by more than 23%, the strongest increase was in wheat with an increase of nearly 50%.

Meanwhile, the price of feed accounts for 65-70% of the cost of livestock. Recently, farms and livestock households are facing double difficulties: African swine fever and high prices of animal feed. Faced with these difficulties, many farms and households have had to temporarily empty their barns.

Mr. Quy (Que Tan commune, Que Vo district, Bac Ninh) has been engaged in livestock farming for 20 years. His total pig herd always maintains 10 sows and hundreds of meat pigs. However, the African swine fever epidemic along with the continuously high price of animal feed forced him to give up his job. Some large barns have been demolished, built inns for rent, leaving only a small row, where he raises a few beef cattle.

“With this price of animal feed, I calculate that a pig that is released from the barn must be about 4.3-4.5 million for bran, plus 1.2 million for the breed, if the price is 55, the farmer still loses about 200,000 VND, no work, no electricity and water,” said Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy, Que Tan commune, Que Vo district, Bac Ninh.

Like Mr. Quy, Mr. Dung’s main occupation (Dao Vien commune, Que Vo, Bac Ninh) is animal husbandry. Accumulating from favorable years of breeding, he invested nearly 1 billion dong to build a large, self-contained barn, ensuring standards with the desire to continue with the profession. However, the barn was only used for a litter of pigs, so Mr. Dung had to leave it empty.

“I got 400 pigs, 4 months later I sold them for 42, that’s a loss. I disinfected and entered the herd of 300 pigs for half a month, then I got sick. Up to now, the price of animal feed is too high, but the family does not. there’s money left,” shared Mr. Dinh Van Dung, commune of Dao Vien, Que Vo, Bac Ninh.

“Most of the province, household husbandry has decreased by 60-70%, only livestock farms, cooperatives, and livestock establishments are left, where people can take the initiative to breed, apply public science. If technology and disease control can be well controlled, it is still maintained,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Minh, Deputy Director of the Bac Ninh Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine.

According to the Department of Livestock Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, it is expected that the price of animal feed will remain and increase until the end of 2022 when the offer price of imported materials to Vietnam continues to be higher than the current one.

Meanwhile, farming households still account for a large proportion, about 10 million households. When the price of feed increases, the price of live hogs remains low. The biggest disadvantage is still small farmers, because they are completely passive from input to consumption.

Live hog price can’t break even

While the price of animal feed has increased continuously since the beginning of the year, the price of live hog sold is still at a low level, no new changes have been recorded. Currently, farms or small farms have not yet reached the break-even point.

In the North, live hog prices today (April 27) were flat at 52,000 – 56,000 VND/kg. In which, the highest transaction level was 56,000 VND/kg, continued to be recorded in Hung Yen, Thai Binh and Hanoi. Following are the provinces of Bac Giang, Phu Tho and Tuyen Quang, currently trading at a price of 55,000 VND/kg. The remaining localities have stable purchasing in the range of 52,000 – 54,000 VND/kg.

Live hog prices in the central provinces also did not record any change. In this area, the purchase of live pigs remains stable with prices ranging from 52,000 to 57,000 VND/kg.

In the South, live hog price leveled off at 53,000 – 57,000 VND/kg. Specifically, the highest price recorded in An Giang province was 57,000 VND/kg. The remaining localities are still trading stably around the average mark of 55,000 VND/kg

Proactive livestock solutions

With this price, in order to maintain livestock production, livestock households have actively adapted to different solutions. For example, reduce the amount of refined food, increase green food to reduce costs and avoid losses. As for the large farms and cooperatives, the solution is to reduce the pressure of animal feed.

Hanoi Livestock Breeding Joint Stock Company both raises pigs for meat and provides breeding pigs. The total herd of pigs always maintains 2,500 heads, of which 400 are breeding pigs.

According to a company representative, the epidemic and the continuously increasing price of animal feed caused livestock losses, and households did not dare to re-herd. The number of pigs for sale also decreased accordingly, reaching about 60-70%. The company has chosen to reduce the quantity and increase the quality of the pig herd to increase the efficiency of livestock production.

“We strengthen the purification, remove the individuals with low quality productivity, the old ones lose quality to keep the productive, high quality individuals as well as the total head to reduce costs. feed over 1 kg to gain weight,” said Mr. Nguyen Duc Sang, Deputy Director of Hanoi Pet Breeding Joint Stock Company.

Mr. Xue’s farm in Phu Luong commune, Bac Ninh province also raises large livestock according to the cooperative model. 7 rows of closed barns with a total herd of 200 sows and 2,000 meat pigs.

Like some other large breeding units, the number of pigs on Mr. Xue’s farm has now halved, to just over 100 sows and 1,000 meat pigs.

According to Mr. Xue’s calculations, for every 1 sow reduction, he has reduced the cost of feed by 12 million VND in a litter.

“The price of animal feed has increased and the African epidemic has not been completely controlled. It is still spreading while livestock production is not profitable. If it increases, the risk of epidemics is great. If you love livestock, you need to maintain it and wait for the right time. If it is stable between supply and demand, then we will dare to develop the pig herd”, said Mr. Dao Viet Xue, Phu Lang village, Phu Luong commune, Que Vo, Bac Ninh.

In addition to the solutions that pig farms and cooperatives are actively applying, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development together with localities also have many groups of solutions such as focusing on increasing the area of cultivation in the region. Raw materials, especially planting new varieties with high yield, added nutrients to the formula to reduce input costs in livestock for livestock households as well as businesses.
