On April 26, the European Commissioner for Internal Markets, Thierry Breton, reminded billionaire Elon Musk to comply with the European Digital Services Act after acquiring Twitter.

In the newspaper Financial Times, Mr Breton went on to insist that Europe welcomes anyone but “we are open to conditions”. He warned that companies that violate the provisions of the Digital Services Act could face fines of up to 6% of annual global revenue and a complete ban if they repeat the offense.
Earlier, Europe reached an agreement on the Digital Services Act “to protect cyberspace against the spread of unauthorized content and ensure the protection of basic rights of users”.
The EC said the new law, called the Digital Services Act, “is aimed at protecting cyberspace against the spread of unauthorized content and ensuring the protection of users’ basic rights”.
To combat hate speech, misinformation and harmful content online, the act requires social media platforms to allow users to label illegal content “easily and effective” so that the content can be removed quickly. The new law is expected to take effect from 2024.
Similar to the EU, the UK also warned Twitter to protect users from harmful content.

Reacting to the European reminder, the US billionaire said the freedom of speech he mentioned was within the framework of the law.
