Vietnam establishes diplomatic relations with Cook Islands

Vietnam signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations with the Cook Islands, a country located in the South Pacific Ocean.

The two sides agreed to officially establish diplomatic relations between the two countries at the ambassadorial level from the date of signing the joint communiqué and apply the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in bilateral relations, according to a statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as tourism, agriculture and fisheries, as well as exchange experiences on climate change response and Covid-19 prevention. The two sides will also coordinate actions at Asia-Pacific regional forums, as well as UN organizations.

With this decision, Vietnam now has diplomatic relations with 190 countries around the world. Vietnam also became the 6th country in ASEAN and 57th in the world with which the Cook Islands establish official diplomatic relations.

The Cook Islands are an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean, with a population of more than 20,000 people and a land area of ​​236.7 square kilometers. The island nation consists of 15 main islands stretching over 2.2 million square kilometers of sea surface.

Fishing and jade mining are two very developed sectors in the Cook Islands. Tourism is the leading industry, accounting for 65% of the island nation’s GDP.

The Cook Islands are a constitutional monarchy with the Queen of England as the head of state, represented by the Governor-General of the Cook Islands. The country gained self-rule in 1965 and was recognized as independent by the United Nations in 1992.
