The bridge is 2,290 m long, including 19 steel beam spans placed on 20 pillars over 40 m high, besides there are 896 m leading bridge. To build the bridge, the French colonialists mobilized 3,000 Vietnamese workers and 40 French directors, engineers, experts, and foremen.

During the war against the US, Long Bien Bridge was a key target of bombardment and was bombed dozens of times. Our air defense troops had to set up a battlefield on the beach in the middle of the Red River and on the highest peak of the bridge to shoot American planes. Currently, Long Bien Bridge is only used for trains, motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians.
