European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on April 27 made the above statement. Ms. von der Leyen said, Poland and Bulgaria are receiving gas from neighboring EU countries. The European Union (EU) is also looking to secure alternative shipping ways and the best possible stock levels across the bloc.

Commenting on Russia’s move, the European Commission President criticized this as an “unreasonable and unacceptable” action.

Meanwhile, Poland announced that it will take legal action against the Russian corporation Gazprom for breach of contract.

For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied the criticism and said that the decision to stop gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria was the result of an unfriendly action against Russia.

Earlier, energy group Gazprom stopped supplying gas to Poland and Bulgaria on the grounds that Moscow had not received payment in rubles from these two countries for gas purchase contracts.

In a statement on April 27, Gazprom said that it had informed the two energy agencies Bulgargaz of Bulgaria and PGNiG of Poland of the decision to stop supplying gas, and stated that the decision will be in effect until payments are made in rubles in accordance with the policy of Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last month.

Gazprom confirmed that it continues to transport gas to Europe via Ukraine at the request of customers.
