Going to the doctor because of strange marks on her nails, the woman was shocked when she discovered the scary culprit

Strange marks on nails

We use our hands throughout the day. Sometimes, we accidentally get our hands scratched or bruised, this is very common.

But for Elizabeth Misselbrook, who lives in Bracknell, Berkshire, England, a strange mark on her fingernails turned out to be a warning sign of cancer.

The 40-year-old woman first noticed a brown stripe on her nails in September 2019. At the time, her GP referred her to a dermatologist.

At first, they said she shouldn’t worry and should come back in three months for a checkup.

Elizabeth Misselbrook, living in Bracknell, Berkshire, UK, has just shared the story of her cancer discovery.

But the stripe began to change and grow – forcing doctors to remove the nail and perform a biopsy.

Elizabeth recounts: “A doctor friend of mine once wrote on Facebook that a stripe on a fingernail is a sign of something“.

I made an appointment with my GP. I don’t wait. It doesn’t itch, just a faint, light brown line“.

Later, Elizabeth was diagnosed with skin cancer.

Doctors said it was stage 1A melanoma, which means it’s invasive but not serious“, Elizabeth said.

Check your nails regularly“.

Doctors wanted to make sure the cancer didn’t come back, so they removed the first knuckle of the finger with the brown stripe.

Elizabeth is now cancer free.

I get really upset when they say they have to amputate my finger but I’m really worried because I have cancer, so I want to make sure it doesn’t come back“, Elizabeth said.

I’m not tired at all and I don’t have to be on medication so I’m grateful. I don’t want to be tired“.

I worry about the impact of finger clipping on activities like writing and playing the flute. I want to play the flute, but I also want to live a long life“.

Elizabeth is now cancer free and said it took a long time for her to receive her diagnosis.

Therefore, she urges people to observe their nails regularly to detect abnormalities.

When they told me it was melanoma, I wasn’t surprised but it was a shock,” Elizabeth said. The stripe is on my left hand and I’m left-handed and I play the flute a lot.“.

In the long run, I never felt like I was going to die because the surgeon reassured me that it was cancer but most likely curable, as it was diagnosed early.“.

I tried to stay calm and thought ‘It’s okay, I have to deal with it and this is not going to be easy.“.

A lot of people have to fight more than me and it’s really hard. Check your nails for anything suspicious that doesn’t go away; if it’s a bruise, it will gradually disappear“.
