So far, Google has only accepted requests to remove sites that share contact information with some threats or demand payment. The company also removed links to bank accounts, credit card numbers and medical records.

According to Google, in recent years, the company has received thousands of requests each year and has approved 13% of them. Ms. Chang hopes approval rates will increase under the expanded rule, which would remove links to confidential login information.

Previously, Google also issued a policy to remove redirects to pornographic content as well as inaccurate, complete and irrelevant personal information in Europe. Last year, Google also started allowing photos of minors to be deleted.

The tech giant says it usually processes requests within a few days. Sites that Google has taken down can still be accessed through other search engines or directly.
