Jessica Watkins – the first African-American woman to set foot on the ISS

The Falcon booster lifted NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, 33, along with 3 other astronauts International Space Station (ISS) before dawn on April 27 (local time) from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. These astronauts will carry out a 6-month NASA space mission on the ISS.

This is the trip fly to space Jessica Watkins’s first flight, also the first NASA flight to include both men and women.

This astronaut said she was inspired by 4 women of color who space travel before that and she was happy to be the first African-American woman to set foot on the ISS.

Ms. Watkins and 3 other astronauts from NASA’s Crew 4 docked at the ISS after about 16 hours of flight. This is considered the fastest launch to the space station that NASA has ever made.

“The duration of this launch is equal to the time it takes to get from New York to Singapore,” said Steve Stich, NASA’s Commercial Crew Program Manager.

Jessica Watkins specializes in the study of landslides on Mars and once participated in the scientific research team of the red planet probe. In 2021, NASA announced that Ms. Watkins had been selected for the Artemis program, under which she will join the crew to return humans to the moon in 2024.
