Many children are admitted to the hospital because of continuous high fever, anorexia, drooling, sore throat… Many children don’t show signs of red bullous rash on palms, legs or buttocks, knees.. but still at risk. Grade 3, 4 severe muscle damage affecting nerves, respiratory system and circulatory collapse.

City Children’s Hospital has just successfully treated a 3-year-old child, from Hau Nghia, Long An, who got worse after only 2 days of continuous high fever and escaped from acute pulmonary edema and respiratory failure thanks to timely emergency treatment. time.

According to BSCKII Nguyen Tran Nam – Deputy Director of Children’s Hospital City, hand, foot and mouth disease is an intestinal viral infectious disease. The most dangerous virus strain is the EV 71 strain. This is a strain that causes severe complications, causing damage to the brain, heart, and respiratory tract, causing respiratory and circulatory failure in children. If not treated promptly, the child’s life will be in danger.

According to the pathology, the manifestations of hand, foot and mouth disease in children are small red, papules, like mosquito bites on palms, soles, knees, elbows, buttocks. These are the positions where children often come into contact with the floor. In particular, children have sores in the mouth.

Dr Nam said that normally more than 90% of children with hand, foot and mouth disease can be cared for and treated at home. Some babies have suspected complications with signs such as high fever, temperature above 39 degrees Celsius.

Dr. Nam emphasized that when monitoring children with hand, foot and mouth disease, regular temperature monitoring is essential. If parents only touch their forehead to check their child’s temperature, it will not be accurate.

To measure the most accurate temperature for children, parents should measure before and after taking fever-reducing medicine. If only touching with bare hands, parents will not know the response of antipyretic drugs. If taking for 1-2 hours to reduce fever but the child’s body temperature does not decrease, parents need to take the child to the hospital immediately.

Besides high fever, some red warning signs when a child has hand, foot and mouth disease are lethargy and startling. Parents should be aware that a startle is different from a convulsion. Parents need to monitor their children while they are sleeping, if they see their children startling or struggling to wake them up, be careful that the disease has caused brain damage. At this time, parents need to take their children to the hospital to be monitored.

Another danger sign is shaking hands and feet, unsteady walking, forcing parents to carry them. Stop eating, cyanosis is a serious condition.

At this time, parents should take the child to the nearest medical facility for timely examination.

How is home care?

Dr. Nam said that children with no complications can be cared for and treated at home. Parents give their children soft, liquid foods. Give the child fever-reducing and pain-relieving drugs if the child is in pain and has a high fever to recognize early complications if any of the disease. Parents should closely monitor their child’s signs so that they can take them to a doctor promptly if they suspect signs of complications.

Hand, foot and mouth virus spreads very quickly and there is currently no vaccine. In addition, the disease can recur. Therefore, Dr. Nam believes that prevention should be the top priority.

Accordingly, for young children going to kindergarten, parents need to pay attention to keeping their children’s hygiene carefully. Children who go to crowded schools if there are children in the class with hand, foot and mouth disease, they are at higher risk.

Even children under 1 year of age who have not yet attended school also suffer from hand, foot and mouth disease. This is because adults do not have the disease but are carriers of the virus to infect their children through care. Therefore, parents themselves must also maintain good hygiene to avoid infecting their children. Hand hygiene is considered the best way to prevent disease, especially before eating and after defecation – Dr. Nam said.
