9 isekai series are underrated but still have great views (P.1)

The popularity of the isekai genre has grown to the point where there are times when audiences receive more than 10 new isekai anime series at the same time. The fact that so many new series are launched has made critics become strict and gradually bored with this genre. But despite complaints from critics, fans still seem to be very satisfied with some of the isekai anime series.

9. Sword Art Online

By the time Sword Art Online came out in 2012, it had created an anime craze. Not only did the series become one of the few light novel-based anime with a sequel, but it also catapulted the isekai genre into popularity over the next decade. But that didn’t save Kirito’s complaints that the boring protagonist was nothing but self-indulgent.

Kirito is amazing in every way (even if he’s not undefeated) no matter what game he’s in and women always have a crush on him. Although this motif was too boring, it is undeniable that it influenced many later works of the same genre.

8. Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody

Ichiro Suzuki is an MMORPG game programmer, suddenly one day he wakes up and realizes he is living in the game world with the new identity of Satou Pendragon. Fortunately, despite facing a huge army, he was able to destroy them all with a special skill for new players, allowing him to reach his maximum stats.

However, the film encountered harsh reviews from the audience when the main character absorbed too many slaves. This is said to contradict the image of a nice guy that the filmmakers have built for Satou.

7. Arifureta

People’s rating for Arifureta depends on whether they read the light novel or not. For fans of the original light novel, this is an unappealing adaptation, but still acceptable and engaging in its own way when it comes to building Hajime as an extremely powerful character. However, to strict reviewers, Hajime in the anime version is like a character deviating from the original.

Hajime is a nice guy, he is fed up of being betrayed by his classmates and starts a new adventure on his own. Hajime not only possesses incredible strength, but also has a group of beautiful female monsters as his companions. The fact that Hajime has so many relationships with female characters gives those who don’t like the harem genre even more reason to hate this series.

6. GATE

GATE is definitely unlike most isekai anime of its time and present. The series revolves around imaginary creatures from another world that invade and attack Ginza, forcing the JSDF into a parallel world. The main character of the film is Yoji Itami, the leader of a group of JSDF soldiers who enter the world to gather information in the hope of finding a way to peacefully exist for both worlds.

Although GATE seems to be a breath of fresh air for the isekai genre, it still encounters negative reviews in terms of concept implementation when building many situations that do not make sense with the film’s flow.
