Google accepts requests to remove phone numbers from search results

After a long time accepting requests to remove some personal information from search results, Google is now starting to expand this possibility further.

According to EngadgetGoogle has expanded policy to allow users to request that contact information such as their phone number, email address, and home address be removed from search results. Users can also ask Google to remove logins if they appear in queries.

The company’s previous stance was to limit requests to special circumstances, such as fraudulent contact numbers, as well as conspicuous fraud targets such as bank details and credit cards for people to avoid. Google will still review requests to ensure data integrity, for example it will not remove references to public records.

The expansion of data removal from search results follows recent efforts by Google to limit the spread of sensitive information. As of last year, Google users under the age of 18 can request that their photos be removed from image searches. However, this could be one of the more important developments.

While an extensive policy is not yet guaranteed to protect user privacy, it may deter scammers or harassers who are relying on quick Google searches to achieve their goals.
