On May 12, the 31st SEA Games will officially open in Hanoi. athletes will compete to compete for 526 sets of medals in 40 sports. Particularly in handball, there are 4 sets of medals, including men’s beach handball and men’s and women’s indoor handball.

However, on April 21, the Organizing Committee announced the cancellation of the women’s beach handball content because Indonesia announced its withdrawal at the last minute, so it could not be held because this content only had 2 teams, Vietnam and Thailand. Lan.

A few things to know about handball

Handball is a team sport. Each team has 7 players (including goalkeeper). Both will try to throw a ball into the opponent’s goal. The team that throws the ball into the other team’s goal more than once in two 30-minute halves will be the winner. Modern handball is usually played indoors, but outdoor variations still exist in the form of field throw (which was more popular in the past) and beach handball.

Handball is played at a fairly fast pace and there are collisions as the defenders try to prevent the attackers from getting close to the target. Player collision is only allowed when the defensive players are completely in front of the attacking players, i.e. between the attacking players and the goal. This is called a player sandwich.

Any collision from the side or especially from the rear is considered dangerous and usually carries a penalty. When the defender successfully blocks an attacking player, play is stopped and restarted by the attacking team from the position of the infraction or above the 9 meter line.

Lineups and competitions

Handball is a team sport with high resistance. Each round consists of two teams playing against each other, each team has 7 people including 1 goalkeeper and 6 pitchers. The goal of both teams is to throw the ball into the opponent’s goal (3x2m). If the ball completely crosses the goal line, the goal will be counted.

The size of the playing field is about 40x20m, divided into two parts for each team. In which the free-throw limit line is 9m away from the goal, the goalkeeper’s “fence” has a radius of 6m around the goal. In the “forbidden zone” the pitcher is absolutely not allowed to step in, but can only win the ball in the free-throw area and then throw the ball into the goal to score a goal.

The handball match has 2 halves of 30 minutes each. The team that scores more goals is the winner. If there is a tie, there will be two extra periods of 5 minutes each. If after two extra periods there is still a tie, then the winner or loser of the match will be decided by a penalty shootout like in football.

Laws of possession of the ball and errors in the game

The pitcher must not hold the ball for more than 3 seconds and must not run more than 3 steps while holding the ball. If a player violates the above rules, there will be a penalty of 1 direct throw to your team. Players are allowed to pass the ball to teammates, ball to dribble like in basketball. If during a match, a team holds the ball too long without scoring (passing the ball to buy time), the referee has the right to take the ball and give it to the opposing team.

The player can block the opponent from throwing the ball with his hand or with the whole arm, block the blanket directly (prevent the front) but not from behind the opponent’s back, do not set up a fence to block. Players are also not allowed to steal the ball while the ball is in the opponent’s hand, not to jump on or push the opponent’s body. All of the above offenses, if violated, are penalized a direct throw to your team.

The most special feature of handball, which is different from other sports, is that when a player on the field is substituted, he can still return to the field to play again and there is no limit to the number of players entering the field.
